Silver Surfer or Bald Naked Guy?

I used my super-posable Spiderman action figure as a model for this sketch. There are magnets on the bottom of his feet so it’s very easy to get him in almost any position if standing on a metal surface. I was planning for this to be the Silver Surfer, but I never got around to finishing it and  at least giving him his surfboard; so I guess this is really just a bald naked guy.

Bored farmers

I collect photos of all kinds for sketching and inspiration. Not really sure where I found this or what’s going on, but I thought the image was compelling.

Sketching with a permanent line and no erasing can produce some interesting effects. The photo wasn’t shot with a fish eye lens, but my sketch came out that way.

Trainspotting

So I got this new sketchbook the other day. It’s lightweight paper and a lot of it, my goal with this one has been to just fill it as quickly as I can. I have a tendency to get too consumed with details and trying to make things perfect even with a sketch, which prevents me from getting enough practice in. So with this sketchbook I’ve been skipping the pencil and starting out with ink right off the bat.

I sketch with the gray ink side of the Kuretake double-sided brush pen first, then I fill in more details with the black ink.

Oh yeah, Trainspotting is a sweet movie.

Dr. Doom

I absolutely love the character design of Dr. Doom. Of course he was created by the greatest comic book duo in history being Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. Kirby is one of my favorite artists, and not just from comics but from any medium. I’d love to color this some day.

I believe this was inked with my Pentel Pocket Brush, which is no doubt the best brush pen I’ve ever used.

Martin Luther King Jr.

I’m going to try and start updating my blog more frequently. I’ve been doing a pretty good job at sketching regularly, but a terrible job at posting any of it. I did this one on MLK day and thought it turned out fairly well.

The Invincible Conan

Finished this sketch a little while ago, scanned it, then totally forgot about posting it for a couple weeks. I guess I’m rather late to the outpouring of love for Conan, oh well. This isn’t the first time I’ve drawn him and I don’t expect it to be the last. I can’t wait to see how he makes his return to the spotlight.

This was done with a double-sided kuretake brush pen with gray and black ink on a piece of watercolor paper.

A couple sketches from Florida

I recently spent a week down in the  St. Petersburg/Tampa area in Florida and was able to get in a few sketches.

Frank Zappa

Just did this commissioned portrait of Frank Zappa for a friend. Not a big fan of his music but he seems like a very wise man and has a lot of interesting quotes to his name. Can’t beat that ‘stache either.

Self portrait

I had been meaning to do a self portrait for quite some time to have something new to use in profile pictures and things like that. I finally got around to it. This was done with a Pentel Pocket Brush and a Kuretake Waterbrush. It came out better than I expected, especially considering how small it is. I think my head is a little over an inch tall.

Vampire guy in color

I decided to color in the sketch I did of this guy for practice. It seemed to take longer than it should have but it was still fun.
